Summer Vibes, Breezy Trades, and Weekend Magic: What’s Happening on Maui Right Now

Aloha, friends! Can you believe we’ve already reached the final weekend of June? Summer is officially in full swing here on Maui, bringing those long, sun-drenched beach days we wait for all year long.

If you’ve stepped outside today, you already know the current island conditions are treating us beautifully. We are currently experiencing classic, breezy trade winds across Maui County. While our windward and mauka (mountain) slopes are catching those quick, refreshing passing showers that keep the island so incredibly lush, leeward sides like Wailea and Kihei are serving up prime, gorgeous beach weather.

Quick Island Reminder: As we ease into peak summer, June also marks the official start of our hurricane season across Hawaiʻi. While we enjoy these beautiful trade-wind days, it’s always a great time for our community to stay informed, sign up for MEMA alerts, and ensure our households are prepared and stocked just in case.

Whether you’re a resident looking to fill your weekend calendar or a visitor looking to dive into true island culture, this weekend is absolutely packed with incredible local events. Here is what is happening around Maui right now:

  • 1. The Kapalua Wine & Food Festival (June 25 – 28) Calling all foodies and wine enthusiasts! One of Maui's most prestigious signature culinary events is happening right now. The 45th Annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival is underway through Sunday, bringing together world-class winemakers, master sommeliers, and top chefs. From high-end wine seminars to culinary demonstrations, it all culminates in the famous Grand Tasting Gala at the gorgeous Ritz-Carlton Maui. If you want to experience the very best of Maui's culinary scene, explore the schedule and details on the official Kapalua Wine & Food Festival Website.
  • 2. The 58th Annual Makawao Parade (Saturday, June 27) Pack your chairs and head Upcountry tomorrow morning! The historic 58th Annual Makawao Stampede Town Parade is taking over Makawao Town this Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.. This is an absolute must-see, deeply rooted community tradition celebrating Maui's rich paniolo (cowboy) heritage. Expect an incredible procession of beautifully decorated pāʻū riders (traditional horseback riders draped in floral leis), local marching bands, and classic island cowboy culture. Check the route maps and parking protocols via the updates on the Makawao Parade Community Page.
  • 3. The 35th Annual Kī Hōʻalu Guitar Festival (Sunday, June 28) Looking for the ultimate, relaxing Sunday afternoon? Head over to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center for the 35th Annual Kī Hōʻalu Festival. Running from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., this free, family-friendly event celebrates the beautiful art of Hawaiian slack-key guitar. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket, grab some local food truck grinds, and listen to some of the finest musicians in the islands perform under the open sky. See the complete artist lineup over at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) Events Calendar.
  • 4. Obon Season Celebrations: Kahului Jodo Mission (Saturday, June 27) Summer on Maui means Obon season is officially here! This beautiful Japanese Buddhist tradition honors ancestral spirits through vibrant dance, music, and unforgettable food (if you haven’t had a fresh Obon flying saucer, you haven't lived!). This Sunday, the community gathers at the Kahului Jodo Mission for their annual Bon Dance celebration. Review the full island schedule to track upcoming temples on Maui Now

Looking Ahead: The Makawao Rodeo & July 4th Festivities

The excitement doesn’t stop this weekend! If you love the energy of the Makawao Parade, make sure to grab tickets for the actual Makawao Rodeo action at Oskie Rice Arena, featuring the Bull Bash on July 3rd followed by full rodeo performances on July 4th and 5th. Keep your eyes on the arena gates and grab tickets through the official Oskie Rice Arena & Kaonoulu Ranch Portal. And of course, keep an eye out for local July 4th fireworks cruises departing out of Maʻalaea Harbor next week to ring in Independence Day on the water!

Maui is truly alive with culture, community, and perfect summer energy this week. Go out, support our local businesses, enjoy the trade winds, and have an amazing weekend!
